what we do

Check this out... http://edutechcput.wordpress.com

favour, please

The CPUT Fundani unit (see http://edutechcput.wordpress.com/) is wanting to conduct two focus groups of around 6 students each, to get feedback on the working of our facebook group. I would really appreciate it if you would volunteer! It can happen at a time that suits you, and should not take to much of your precious ...time! And I would soooo appreciate it ;-) Please let me know if you would be willing to participate in one such session...so we can learn valuable lessons from your experience.

Hermie's crit group

Please remember that my crit group will meet on Thursday and not tomorrow from 10:00-13:00

Hand in Monday

All students:
The Hand In on Monday is for Milestone 2. This is essentially the "last" hand-in for PAD. Last is in brackets, since PAD examiners will look at the whole body of work in the portfolio. BUT Monday is the last sketch/presentation hand-in. After that you move into the care of the STW people, with some input from us. You will be welcome to still keep e-mailing us if you need any input, however we will not be in the studio as often.
It is important that in November you pin up ALLthe Milestones so that examiners can see your progression over time. Therefore, in portfolio you must pin up 1,2 and 3.
You could right at the end render the final final building or build a final final model - because your design will still develop in certain aspects throughout the detailing phase too.

Nearing portfolio

Are you coping? Here are some tips you might find useful:

- make sure to get a good night's rest before your presentation: you want to be well-rested to answer questions well
- plan your time well so that you spend your time in the areas where it will have maximum impact
- don't rely on last-minute printing, rather design you presentation to allow for freehand work, paste-ups etc.
- indicate the north point on all drawings and models
- check the passports for outcomes/ assessment criteria - those are the things your examiners will look for
- ask friends to help you pin up and take down your work
- paste sheets together to save on pin-up time
- rehearse your verbal presentation, make cards with key-words or, even better, use your pin-up presentation to guide your presentation.

- Project 1: we want to see the making of the hub, the TECHNOLOGY is important
- Project 2: we want to see WHERE, in which CLIMATIC CONTEXT you have designed the artist retreat, how did the ARTIST'S character influence the design, how did you deal with the FUNCTIONS?
Project 3: how did you deal with the public and historic CONTEXT, show it!

- you may e mail me at morkelj@cput.ac.za if you have specific questions

Good luck!

Thanks and well done to all of those who participated in today's pin up group crits. Brace yourselves for coming Wednesday's LAST opportunity to discuss improved work on Project 2. The venues will be as on Monday (Lisa in Rm 4.8, Michael in Rm 2B, Jolanda and Hermie on opposite sides of the Studio). St. Lucia projects will go first (pin up at 10:00 - 10:30). Windhoek projects must please be pinned up by 12:00.

In the meantime, hang on to that Project 3 exercise until the next briefing, which is scheduled for Wednesday, 28 April. There will be no session on Monday 26 April, due to the public holiday. Please make sure to take the flu vaccination :-) so that you are alive and well on that day! Nina Maritz, famous Namibian Architect, will be visiting and share her work with you. You may want to Google her in the meantime...

Those students who have not submitted Project 2 work in time for the assessment, must please catch up and be sure to participate in ALL remaining crit sessions. Keep your passports safe and present your work at the June portfolio exam. As from May onwards we will allow some time at the end of each session for those who need feedback on reworked projects.

Good luck and see you on Wednesday!

Project 3

DEPARTMENT OF ARCHITECTURAL TECHNOLOGY

Principles of Architectural Design ‘10

PROJECT 3_ex1

HAND OUT: MONDAY, 12 APRIL. COMPLETE AND BRING TO CLASS DISCUSSION ON WEDNESDAY 14 APRIL AT 12:00 IN RM 2C.

Your next project is set in a heritage context. The briefing and site visit will take place next Monday. Arrangements will be made on Wednesday. Also watch the blog for details.

In order to prepare for this project, you need to do the following work.

Study Chapter 13 (“Introducing settlements as context for architecture.”) of Paul Righini’s “Thinking Architecturally” (2000), pp 251 – 293. Now prepare answers to the following ten questions:

1. List 20 prominent words/ concepts that you find in this chapter.
2. Why, according to Righini, is it important to “read” settlements?
3. Explain the terms “fabric” and “texture”.
4. Define “sense of place”.
5. Name and briefly explain five spatial patterns that Righini deals with.
6. Make a comprehensive list of all the things that should be considered when doing a site analysis.
7. How does Righini explain Lynch’s understanding of “grain” of the context?
8. Explain the concepts of accessibility, legibility, complexitiy and sustainability.
9. What was the key challenge(s) in the case study of Mamre?
10. What was the key challenge(s) in the case study of Wynberg?

For further reading see sources listed on page 310 under “Chapter 13”.

Good luck!

Please read

Dear student,

thank you for those who submitted Project 2 today.

Please collect Project 3 exercise brief from Bongiwe - or attached.

Please use your own transport and meet at 22 Genova Drive, Camps Bay to view Michael Borgstrom's nearly completed project. You will be taken on a tour around the building to see how the design idea has been integrated into the technology and detail resolution of the project.

Then meet in Rm 2C at 12:00 on Wednesday, after which there will be an important Project 2 feedback work shop in the studio.

Those of you who missed the hand in today (we accepted work until 13h30!), may put up your work in the studio. Feedback may be given, but you have missed the assessment opportunity. Only those students with valid excuses (sick certificates etc.) qualify for a later assessment. The next assessment opportunity is the Portfolio exams on 26 - 28 May 2010.

Please don't remove your work until 14:00 on Wednesday. Passports may be collected from Bongiwe (on 2nd floor) on Wednesday.

Thank you.

Hand in Monday

Good luck for the rest of the weekend, remember you do not have to have elevations, just a readable, understandable model and the other things described on the passport.

You can all do it!

Pages 3

Ok, so I found out that the pages are only for STATIC info, so please keep on reading the Home page for latest info. Will add other info to the pages, project brief etc. Keep watching.

Pages follow up

It seems that I can only add one post to each page, but will keep on experimenting, see test under project 2

Pages

Ok, clearly I have discovered how to add pages, but have no idea how to add new posts to each page! Please help if you have the answer!

Nina Martitz

For the Desert Dwellers - read this Nina Maritz article

For Monday

Build a site model on which you place your first idea model - this will be very helpful, since both sites have considerable slopes on them.

new pages added

Please see the new links at the top of the page. To organise our info better, all info will be added per project. So see under Project 2 new posts.

Hand in yesterday

What a wonderful hand in yesterday! The quality of the presentations was exeptional! Congratulations to those of you that got "outcomes achieved". For those that did not get "outcomes achieved" it could mostly be contributed to incompleteness. We hope that you could see the value in building so many models and how it helped the process.

Work for Monday 8 March

In groups of two you must prepare a PowerPoint presentation. It must have a maximum of 20 slides. You must print out the presentation in black and white and bring it also on a flash disk or cd. Make sure it works! Meet in at 10:00 in room 2c on Monday 8 March.

Climatic study
(Basic information available at Carleen in the printing room, you must also find your own.)

Use diagrams, pictures and words to compare the following two climatic regions: The sub-tropical area of St Lucia in Kwazulu Natal and the desert area of Windhoek in Namibia. Your must look at least at the following:
• Characteristics of the climate, for example rainfall, sun exposure, winter, summer, temperature etc.
• How it influences the form of a building for optimal sustainable design.
• Find suitable architectural precedent. The precedent must have been built after 1990, published in an architectural magazine and not a vernacular building.

Functional study
The book, Great Spaces: Flexible Homes is available at Bongiwe at reception for use for half an hour per group. You may scan images at the scanner at reception.

Compare your current living situation/s with an example from the book. With diagrams, pictures and words, describe similarities and/or differences by looking at least at:
• Space for sleeping
• Space for cooking/eating
• Space for bathing/ablution
• Space for working/studio

Enjoy!

Feedback

Sorry for the long wait! Please contribute your thoughts.

Feedback from crit sessions: week of 8-12 Feb

In no specific order:

• The structural properties of the materials you are working with is very important and not only the size and dimensions
• The architectural idea/concept can be informed by two very specific things in this project
o the function
o the technology
• Precedent to look for:
o Safe Haven Library by Ban Tha Song Yang in Thailand see http://www.tyintegnestue.no/ this info was found by Gabrielle. Thanks!
o Rafeal Iglesia: Quichua and swimming pool, Rosario, Argentina, 2001, this info was found by Rafiq P, thanks! If somebody can find a link, please add this
o also see ruralstudio.com see specifically Yancey Tire Chapel // Sawyerville, AL // 1995 Thesis Project and HERO Playground // Greensboro, AL // 1997 Thesis Project
• The architectural idea is not a guess but a discovery and must be informed by research
• Find out about PRIMARY, SECONDARY AND TERTIARY structure and how that can inform your idea
• The MAIN FUNCTION of this hub is to be A LANDMARK
• As per Tom V: If you are going to express the three different functions as three different entities, really think about how and why they are different or the same and how this can inform what these spaces/places look like

Feedback from crit

Crit and general feedback 3 Feb 2010

For Monday:

•Bring what is asked for in the brief for Monday

In addition:
•Summarise your PST 1 into one A3 page, taking into consideration what you learned in the crit session today
•On one A3 page bring gumpole and marine ply information
•Meet in the studio at 10:00, but do not pin up yet

What was said in the crit today (in no specific order):
•Make conclusions of the information that you found for PST 1
•Think about each of the chosen functions – how can this be solved in more than one way in these specific circumstances for project 1
•How can functions double up/become another function at different times of the day
•Make sense of your own information, it is no use just copying things out of books
•In other words recording information is essential, but do not leave it at that – make sense out of it for the specific project you are working on (not generic)
•Try to communicate clearly what your are doing
•You are not designing a huge building, this is a shelter that will not have anybody working there, in other words it must run on its own.
•Find out what “the human bubble” is
•Find out what the “Hole in the wall” project in India is about
•As asked in class – you may change the form of the central load bearing core, but it must still have a footprint of 1m² and be 5m high. It is structural in the sense that you can attach things to it. The inside is not accessible, but need to house services like electrical and wifi equipment.

Remember also:
•Do not jump to conclusions too quickly – the projects for this year has been made longer than usual so that you have time to delve into research more before getting to a final answer
•Low tech presentation is fine – you do not have to make expensive colour copies to impress us
•Make sure of your spelling!
•Reference where you get your information from
•Start your own blog by the end of Feb and add your scanned profile sheet as the first entry

Good luck!

NB for Monday 8 Feb

Bring along information regarding the size  of gumpoles (diameter and length) and also of marine ply (thickness and size of sheet). Know what the structural properties of these materials are (for example - how far it can span etc.

Also from Great Spaces Flexible Homes

This little structure is called the I-Box

More ideas from Great Spaces Flexible Homes

You will find this book on shortloan in the library: Great Spaces Flexible Homes
There are many ideas which you need to look at in there.

This building is called Gucklhupf by Hans Peter Wörndl

Nelson Mandela Museum Pavilions

Make sure you study and understand this building well. Again look at the drawings, this is the kind of information that must be on a submission (plus some nice rendering and a few people!).

More precedent from "10 years 100 buildings"

Masimbambane College Multipurpose Building - note the structural clarity and the footings.
What wonderful use of materials and expression of technology!

This section is from Singita Lebombo-Swenie Lodges by omm design workshop. Note the way the technology is drawn, even though this is a sketch drawing. You need to show similar detail for any sketch/pad submission.

Some more House Tzaneen images. You should really get this book, it is a one stop shop for local precedent studies. Please ask the lectuers about where and how.

Precedent studies to look out for

Here are some of the precedent studies you can look at in "10years 100 buildings". The first drawing is House Tzaneen by ‘Ora Joubert Architects (she is also the creator/editor of the book).
